Most of the migrants are forced to work in unhealthy conditions, and they are underpaid in almost every job by the locals. This denies them a quality life as their children are not supported by quality education, the family members do not get adequate health care, nutritional food, and more.

Though political instability is the primary cause of migrant issues, it transforms into different shapes including civil war, political crisis, wars between the various countries, terrorism, and more. Almost every continent is struggling with the inflow of migrants, and many of the countries do not have a standard set policy to address the migrant issues efficiently. It should be noted that the worst hit areas of violence including Syria, Africa, and Central America show the highest rate of the exodus. Per the latest data available, there are 21.3 million refugees around the world, and more than 50% of them are children – an alarming situation.

Considering the criticality of the migrant issues, a number of non-profit groups and various international organizations have come up to change the fate of refugees. They lobby for campaigns in favor of migrants, provide support for various legal issues, legal assistance to resist exploitation, protection from atrocities, support for financial and healthcare needs, and more.

Some of the major international organizations that played an active role in resolving various migrant issues include International Federation for Human Rights, Amnesty International, United Nations Human Rights, Human Rights Watch, Migrant-Rights.org, commissioner for human rights, and more.

Apart from international organizations, even the initiatives by individuals are playing an important role in addressing various migrant issues locally. One such initiative is Larkin & Lacey Frontera Fund, a fund set up by Jim Larkin and Jim Larkin, the founders of Phoenix New Times. Both of them decided to use the amount they received for challenging their arrest by Maricopa County Sheriff and made it as a fund to support various migrant rights groups in Arizona.

The journalists were arrested on October 18, 2007, by Sheriff Joe Arpaio at midnight from their homes for reporting a strange grand jury procedure of asking reporters’ notes on articles that are covering the Sherriff.

Additionally, the grand jury even demanded the identity of the online readers of those articles. Considering their years of experience in fighting for First Amendment rights, both Lacey and Larkin sued the county at the U.S. Court of Appeals.

The court ordered the acquittal of the journalists and ruled a settlement amount of $3.75 million. The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund is being used to support various migrant, human, and civil rights groups as well as promoting civic participation and freedom of speech in Arizona.
